Memories Abound

January 30 @ 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm CDT
Memories Abound

In  the exhibition Memories Abound  award-winning photojournalist Eli Reed looks back at many of the memorable people, world events and social issues he has covered over the course of his long career. For half a century, his photography has captured the face of racism and documented human suffering in conflicts around the world. He has photographed deprivation from Beirut to Central America, and filmed the Lost Boys of Sudan, young men Reed described as "living through life-threatening hell." He has also worked as a set photographer on numerous Hollywood movies, and chronicled high profile celebrities for major magazines.  This selection of his work also includes a much-acclaimed photograph of the aftermath of George Floyd's 2020 murder in Minneapolis and Floyd's funeral in Houston, Texas.

Reed who a 1983 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University and became a full member of Magnum Photos in 1988, is no stranger to our UT community.  After 17 years teaching UT students as Clinical Professor at the School of Journalism and Media he retired from teaching in 2021 but continues to win awards.  Most recently, the Gordon Parks Choice of Weapons Award (2021), and the I.F. Stone Medal for Journalistic Independence (2021). We are thrilled to welcome Eli Reed back to UT to celebrate his extraordinary photographs and our shared memories.
