On Feb 3rd the School of Journalism and Media in collaboration with The Texas Tribune and Austin Photo Night will host a panel discussion about the role of local visual journalists in reporting on the tragic floods that impacted the Central Texas Community last summer.

Join our participants on Tuesday February 3, 2026 at 6:00 pm in DMC 5.102 followed by refreshments at our Exhibition Gallery opening on the 3rd Floor Lobby of DMC.

Panel Moderator: Julia Robinson , Austin Photo Night  and local NPPA leadership

Editor and Director of Photography : Pu Ying Huang , The Texas Tribune

Front line Photographers:

- Sam Owens (San Antonio - newspaper staff for closest metro newspaper)

- Brenda Bazan (San Antonio - freelance coverage for digital statewide org) and

- Carter Johnson (Austin - freelance coverage for nationals)

This is a unique opportunity for students and the general public to hear from local frontline visual journalists--working on spec or on assignment for local, state and national media, covering the July 2025 floods in Central Texas from the first hours after news of the tragedy became known.

Our moderator will engage our guests in conversation about how visual journalists approach doing emergency work,  issues of public and media safety, considerations for ethical representation of those impacted among other topics;   Students will learn from lessons learned by these reporters and gain insight into the importance of the local news perspective from journalists covering their own communicaties when tragedy strikes.
